In the last year in the EU-27, a total of 22.6 million tons of pigmeat was produced. Germany takes first place with 24% of the total, followed by Spain (14%), France (9%), Poland (7%), Denmark (7%), Italy (7%) y Holland (6%).

Vietnam to boost pig production by 18% in two years

Vietnam plans to increase its pig production by 18% to 32 million heads by 2013 through expansion of pig farming in the northern and central parts of the country, according to Nguyen Thanh Son, Deputy Director General of the Husbandry Department.

The pig’s reproductive cycle lasts for 20 weeks, with weaning at 21 days: 16,5 gestation period + 3 lactating + average time on heat. Supposing that the sows wean 10 piglets, we can then come to the following conclusion: it takes two weeks to produce a piglet.
