Luzon faces increasing prospects of a meat shortage this Christmas, as the government falls short of target hog and poultry importations and Central Mindanao, a key producer of hog meat, not having enough for the country’s northern regions.

The latest figures from the swine census published by the Spanish Agriculture Ministry show a slight decrease in the swine population during the first six months of 2009. This decrease is mainly due to the fall in the number of piglets.

The Ukrainian Statistics Committee reported that as of September 1, 2009 Pig population showed 7.4 million heads which is 7.5% up.

During the second quarter of 2009 the number of sacrificed animals increased by 4.6% compared to the same period of 2008 and by 3.6% compared to 2007, reaching a total of 7.588 million head.
