Denmark – New decline in swine census

The latest swine census data from the month of October shows a 5,3% decrease in Danish swine herds, in comparison with the same period last year, reaching its lowest level in 10 years with a total of just 12 million animals.

Canadian hog, export and farm numbers down

Canadian hog inventories as of October 1 stood at 11.9 million head, down 0.8% from the same date in 2009. There were 7,035 hog farms as of October 1, down 8.3% from the same date one year earlier.

Australia - Prospects for the Australian pig industry

Swine closing inventories for CY 2011 are forecast at 2.5 million head, up on the 2.45 million head estimated for CY 2010. Closing inventory for CY 2009 has been revised upwards from 2.3 million head to 2.302 million head, in line with recently released official ABS statistics.

European Union - Numbers of pigs and goats have stabilised over the past decade

Cattle and sheep livestock numbers have fallen slightly over the past decade, while the numbers of pigs and goats have stabilised in the EU as a whole. From 2008 to 2009 the number of cattle, pigs and sheep in the EU decreased by 0.7 %, 1.0 % and 2.3 % respectively, while the number of goats increased by 16.1 % in Member States with a significant herd.

Spain – Increase in pork exports

Romania – Evolution of regional swine census

The latest data published by the Romanian Institute of Statistics referring to the evolution of the swine census in May 2010, with respect to May 2009, show increases in the Southeast region (1.3 percentage points), the Western region (0,9), Bucharest - Ilfov (0,4) and the Central region (0,1) and a decrease in the region of Muntenia Sud (-0,2), the Northwest region (-0,4), Southwest Oltenia (-0,8) and the Northeast region (-1,3).

European Union - Less oilseed

According to COCERAL oilseeds crop forecast, published on september, European Union-27 oilseed production has decreased this year from 29.27m tonnes to 27.739m tonnes, with the most significant drop seen in rapeseed production.

USA - Hog inventory down 3 percent

U.S. inventory of all hogs and pigs on September 1, 2010 was 65.0 million head. This was down 3 percent from September 1, 2009 but up 1 percent from June 1, 2010.

Spain – The slaughter of swine declines and the production of pork meat increases during the first semester of this year

According to the latest figures published by the Spanish Minister of Agriculture on swine production during the first 6 months of this year, pork meat production has been stable, reaching 1.715.515 t, which represents a slight increase of 0, 19% with respect to the same period last year, while on the other hand, the number of animals slaughtered (19.972.386) has declined by 2,10% between January and June or 2010, with respect to the same period in 2009 (20.400.063).

Canada – Hog production forecast down

Hog production for 2011 is forecast at 27.4 million head, down 2.1 percent compared to the estimated 28 million head in 2010 which was down 4.4 percent compared to 2009. Slaughter is forecast at 20.8 million hogs in 2011, down 2.1 percent from 2010. A lower pig crop in 2010 has resulted in lower slaughter numbers. Continued lower hog exports translated into more domestic slaughter, estimated at 21.25 million head in 2010. Mirroring reduced slaughter in Canada, pork production is forecast at 1.725 MMT for 2011, or a further decline of 1.4 percent from the 1.75 MMT estimated for 2010.
