USA - Hogs inventory down 1 percent

United States inventory of all hogs and pigs on December 1, 2010 was 64.3 million head. This was down 1 percent from December 1, 2009, and down 2 percent from September 1, 2010.

Germany - Significant rise in pig meat production in the 3rd quarter of 2010

In the 3rd quarter of 2010, just under 2 million tonnes of meat were produced from commercial slaughtering in Germany, 4.2% more than in the same quarter a year earlier. As further reported by the Federal Statistical Office (Destatis), this rise was mainly due to the significant increase in the number of pigs slaughtered. The production of poultry meat is also on the rise, while the production of beef is declining.

France –The swine sector in 2009

According to the latest data published by the French agricultural statistics survey, Agreste, in the “GraphAgri France 2010” report, during 2009 the French swine herd had a total of 14,6 million pigs, of which 0,9 million were sows.

Denmark – New decline in swine census

The latest swine census data from the month of October shows a 5,3% decrease in Danish swine herds, in comparison with the same period last year, reaching its lowest level in 10 years with a total of just 12 million animals.

Canadian hog, export and farm numbers down

Canadian hog inventories as of October 1 stood at 11.9 million head, down 0.8% from the same date in 2009. There were 7,035 hog farms as of October 1, down 8.3% from the same date one year earlier.

Australia - Prospects for the Australian pig industry

Swine closing inventories for CY 2011 are forecast at 2.5 million head, up on the 2.45 million head estimated for CY 2010. Closing inventory for CY 2009 has been revised upwards from 2.3 million head to 2.302 million head, in line with recently released official ABS statistics.

European Union - Numbers of pigs and goats have stabilised over the past decade

Cattle and sheep livestock numbers have fallen slightly over the past decade, while the numbers of pigs and goats have stabilised in the EU as a whole. From 2008 to 2009 the number of cattle, pigs and sheep in the EU decreased by 0.7 %, 1.0 % and 2.3 % respectively, while the number of goats increased by 16.1 % in Member States with a significant herd.

The latest data published by the Romanian Institute of Statistics referring to the evolution of the swine census in May 2010, with respect to May 2009, show increases in the Southeast region (1.3 percentage points), the Western region (0,9), Bucharest - Ilfov (0,4) and the Central region (0,1) and a decrease in the region of Muntenia Sud (-0,2), the Northwest region (-0,4), Southwest Oltenia (-0,8) and the Northeast region (-1,3).
