The European breeding herd continues to contract in response to poor returns — although Holland and Denmark have seen an increase, as weaner producers send more animals to Germany.

Poland- Slow growth of swine population

In 2008 the Polish swine population reached its lowest levels in 40 years. The latest census carried out last year shows that although the population has grown, the total increase has only been by 0.1% compared to the previous year. However, the number of breeding sows has increased by 6%.

European Union - Pigmeat production in 2008

In 2008 pigmeat production in the EU-27reached 259.6 million head (Table 2), of which more than half (54.4%) came from four countries (DE, DK, ES and FR). The EU foreign balance showed a surplus of 1.8 million tonnes (pigmeat and processed pigmeat), i.e. 7% of the slaughtering, but extra-EU trade represented only 14% of the national foreign trade (in volume terms).

Croatia – Increase in number of pigs

Previous 2009 data, as compared to the final 2008 data, changed in the following way: In comparison to the previous year, the number of cattle decreased by 2%, the number of sheep by 4% and the number of goats by 10%, while the total number of pigs increased by 13% and of poultry by 7%.
