On farm placement with us at the moment for the next few months is Conor Heenan, 3rd year BSc AgSci student from Munster Technological University Kerry.

From County Limerick, Conor is currently engaged in hands-on learning with our team while conducting research and development trials in collaboration with various stakeholders.

His first research trial will be with our colleagues at Interchem (Ireland) Ltd using a product from CCPA GROUP called Feedstim Sow. This product enhances cellular protection in the udder thus producing more colostrum during the lactating period. Research trials from other countries have shown many positives including an increased litter weight at weaning, reduced piglet mortality during the lactation period and a reduction in mastitis in sows.

This practical experience allows him to apply knowledge from his studies to real-world challenges in livestock production. By exploring innovative strategies for improving animal health and welfare, feed efficiency, and overall farm sustainability, he will not only gain invaluable insights into the pig industry but also enhance critical research skills that may inspire him to go into research after graduating.

We aim for our students placement to help bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application, while contributing to the student’s professional growth in many areas of agricultural science.

On World Food Day, we at McAuliffe Pig Farms are proud to stand with everyone around the globe who are leading the fight against hunger and malnutrition. This year’s theme, “Water is life, water is food. Leave no one behind.”, highlights the essential role water plays in food security and the sustainability of agriculture.

As part of Ireland’s agricultural community, we recognise the responsibility we share in ensuring access to nutritious food for all. Every day, we work to raise high-quality, safe, nutritious and sustainable pork that nourishes families here in Ireland and beyond.
